Starting January 1, 2025, a new law will come into effect in France, which will place obligations on the producers of commercial (industrial and commercial) packaging. This law is based on the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste. Extended Producer Responsibility means that manufacturers and producers are responsible for the entire lifecycle of their products, including disposal and recycling.
The new law covers a wide range of packaging used by commercial users, including reusable packaging such as drums, pallets, wooden and plastic crates.
Packaging that is not already covered by existing EPR streams will now also fall under the extended producer responsibilities for commercial packaging. This complements the EPR streams for household packaging and graphic paper, as well as the EPR stream for catering packaging.
Starting January 1, 2025, companies that place these types of packaging on the market must ensure that they comply with the new legal requirements. This means they will be responsible for the take-back and recycling of these packaging materials.
The new law on extended producer responsibility will have far-reaching impacts on companies using industrial and commercial packaging. Companies will need to review and adapt their existing processes to comply with the new legal requirements. This includes the responsibility for the take-back and recycling of packaging that was not previously covered by existing regulations. Similar to household packaging, this obligation can be outsourced to a disposal system in France.
The introduction of this law means that companies must now ensure their packaging is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. This will either require the implementation of their own recycling programs or collaboration with specialized waste disposal companies, as is done with household packaging.
